Altered Lingual Frenulum
An altered lingual frenulum is a condition in which the membrane that connects the
tongue to the floor of the mouth is too short, rigid, or poorly positioned,
limiting tongue movements.
This restriction can affect fundamental functions such as sucking,
chewing, swallowing, breathing, and speech.

How do we address this condition?
Initial assessment
We perform a specialized assessment, which includes:
- Observation of the shape and mobility of the tongue.
- Evaluation of sucking, swallowing, and chewing.
- Analysis of speech and sound articulation.
- Review of resting tongue posture.
- Detection of muscle compensations.
This evaluation allows us to determine the degree of functional impairment of the frenulum.
Treatment preparation
Based on the results, an individualized intervention plan is established, which may include:
- Exercises to improve tongue mobility and control.
- Work on tongue strength, elasticity, and coordination.
- Re-education of functions such as swallowing and breathing.
In cases where surgical intervention (frenectomy) is necessary, speech therapy is key before and after the procedure to ensure optimal results.
Therapeutic sessions
During the sessions, we work on:
- Exercises for tongue stretching and mobility.
- Re-education of sucking, chewing, and swallowing patterns.
- Improvement of speech articulation.
- Control and coordination of the orofacial musculature.
The entire process is adapted to the age of the patient, whether an infant, child, or adult.
Working from home
Simple exercises are prescribed to be performed at home, which are essential for maintaining and consolidating the progress achieved in the clinic.
Consistency is key to achieving a functional and stable tongue.
Seguimiento y coordinación
Continuous monitoring of the progress is carried out.
When necessary, we work in coordination with dentists, pediatricians, or other specialists, ensuring a comprehensive and effective approach.
