Rotacism
Rotacism is a speech disorder characterised by difficulty in correctly pronouncing the /r/ sound.

How do we get the R?
Identification of rhoticism
- Anamnesis and interviewWe collect information about the history of speech and communication development, as well as relevant family history.
- Assessment of articulatory development: we conduct a detailed assessment of the production of the /r/ sound and its integrity within the context of speech.
- Assessment of the speech organs: We examine the structures of the mouth, such as the tongue, frenulum, palate, etc. Sometimes, we may encounter problems such as a short lingual frenulum.
How we plan our rhoticism sessions
- Setting objectives: We begin by working on the articulation of the /R/ in isolation, and then we integrate it into syllables first, then words, and finally spontaneous speech.
- Oral strengthening and mobility exercises: We design activities to strengthen the orofacial muscles and improve the coordination necessary for accurate articulation of the /r/ sound.
- Auditory discrimination exercises: We work on the patient's ability to distinguish between the correct sound and incorrect variants of the /r/ sound.
Actions for Rotarianism
- Techniques for producing the /R/ sound: We use two techniques, depending on which is most suitable for each patient. We also use specific instruments to achieve R.
- Use of visual materialWe train using resources that are as visual as possible to make the sessions more appealing to children.
- Discrimination training: We also work on the correct auditory discrimination of the R sound and its distinction in writing.
Constant supervision
-
Monitoring of articulatory development: We conduct regular assessments to measure progress and adjust the treatment plan as necessary.
-
Incorporating strategies into the daily routineWe provide guidelines and activities that patients and their families can practise outside of therapy sessions to reinforce progress.
-
Collaboration with family and teachers: We offer guidance and support to families and, in some cases, collaborate with teachers to reinforce intervention strategies in the educational environment.
